I often talk about how our values shift – how maturity and experience reshape what matters most....
Your Contradictions Might Be Your Superpower
Ever feel like your personality is a walking contradiction? Embracing the “mismatch” in your personality just might be the key to your strength.
I recently had a birthday, and someone asked if I identify with my zodiac sign—Gemini, the sign known for its dual nature and twin personalities. I’ve never felt particularly aligned with it, but the question stayed with me. How many of us carry around traits that don’t obviously fit together?
We’re complex, and in that complexity lies our range, our adaptability, and often, our strength.
Think about it:
-
You might be both deeply analytical and wildly creative.
-
You might love big social gatherings—and still need a nap afterward.
-
You might crave structure but thrive in chaos.
Here are a few of my own contradictions:
-
I’m energized by connecting with people. I’ve built an entire career around relationships—with clients, teams, and colleagues. Yet, I’m also a true introvert. I need solitude to recharge.
-
I dream of exploring new places and cultures. If I could, I’d travel near and far, every month of the year. I’m also a homebody who finds deep comfort in downtime and routine.
-
I move quickly and can juggle multiple tasks with ease, but I also love going deep. I’ll happily spend hours fine-tuning one project if I know it’ll make a difference.
At first glance, these might seem like mismatches. But I’ve come to see them as tools I can access when the moment calls for it.
The challenge—and the opportunity—is learning how to harness the right strengths at the right time. I do this by creating rhythms that support different parts of myself. For instance, I front-load my week with coffee meetings and collaborative work. Then, I carve out quieter time toward the end of the week for deep focus and one-on-one coaching sessions. It’s a routine that gives me space to toggle between extroverted energy and reflective focus, both of which are essential in my work.
Most of us don’t fit into a single archetype. We shift based on the role we’re playing, the challenge in front of us, or the environment we’re in. When we accept this instead of resisting it, we start using our full range—not just the traits that feel “on brand.”
So the next time you notice one part of yourself contradicting another, ask:
What strength is this revealing?
What moment is this version of me built for?
You might just find that what makes you feel complicated is what makes you powerful.
