It's right around this time of year that people start reflecting on their careers and lives in general. I think the end of the year makes us aware of how quickly time passes, not to mention the tug-of-war between work (ending the year strong) and home (celebrating with loved ones and hopefully enjoying some time off).

It's also planning season for priorities and budgets. It's no surprise that this is when I hear the question I get more than any other since becoming a coach:

**How do I know if I need a coach?**

It's usually followed closely by: *How do I know if someone on my team needs one?*

Let's start with the basics.

## What is coaching?

Coaching is about achieving something you want but don't yet have. You may want to start doing something. You may want to stop doing something. Either way, it's about making a change that will better your work and your life.

Coaching is easiest to understand in comparison to the other kinds of support people turn to. I'm embarrassed to admit that even I didn't fully understand the differences when I started my coach training, despite having had a coach of my own and plenty of mentors.

Imagine an employee says the same thing to five different people:

*"I can't seem to get on the same page with my colleagues during our monthly strategy sessions."*

- **Manager:** "You need to find some common ground. We need tangible decisions to come out of those meetings."
- **Mentor:** "I used to face this issue. Here's how I handled it…"
- **Consultant:** "How about I come in and facilitate the meeting for you?"
- **Therapist:** "You have a history of conflict with colleagues. Tell me how this situation might fit into that pattern."
- **Coach:** "What happens when a peer disagrees with your perspective? What assumptions might be at play?"

The manager, mentor and consultant each offer a solution. The therapist and coach ask questions instead. That's because both are partnerships of equals, grounded in reflection that helps you examine your assumptions and self-limiting thinking. The change sticks because it comes from you.

The difference is direction. The therapist looks back, digging into the past to uncover the whys behind behavior. The coach looks forward, focusing on your future self and what needs to change to get there.

*(For a full rundown of how coaching compares to mentoring, consulting, managing and therapy, see my FAQ.)*

## Signs you could benefit from a coach

1.   The skills that got you promoted aren’t the ones your new role needs. You were the expert who got things done. Now the job is setting direction, developing others and influencing people you don’t manage, and nobody hands you a manual for the shift from doer to strategic leader.

**2.   You feel responsible for everything.** Your days are spent firefighting, work follows you home, and there's no time left to think, plan or lead.

**3.   Your ideas aren't landing the way you want them to.** Maybe you hesitate to push an idea because you're worried about how it will reflect on you. Or maybe you speak up, but your message doesn't stick with senior leaders.

**4.   You're at a crossroads.** You're weighing your next career move and want to choose it deliberately, not just take the first offer on the table.

**5.   You know what you want to change, but you haven't been able to change it on your own.** Coaching helps you map out the change and then actually make it.

## Signs your team (or a leader on it) could benefit from a coach

**6.   You want to promote from within.** You're going with a known entity. That's far less costly than a lengthy external search (recruiters are expensive!), which can put undue pressure on the existing team in the meantime. Promoting from within also helps morale, which can improve engagement and retention.

**7.   Your star performers are plateauing.** People with natural ability, hard work and grit often move up quickly until they reach a level of leadership that requires an entirely new set of skills. That's where they stall, and where coaching helps them adopt the mindset and people skills to keep advancing.

**8.   Your senior leaders are stuck working *in* the business instead of *on* it.** Often, this is because the next levels of leadership aren't developed enough to run parts of the business on their own. Coaching helps senior leaders delegate and develop successors, and helps the next level step up.

**9.   Your company is growing faster than its leaders.** Rapid growth creates as many leadership challenges as opportunities. Two of my clients have doubled their revenue in three years. When that happens, every leader's role changes, whether they're ready or not.

**10.  Your leaders aren't aligned.** There's friction across functions, decisions stall, and meetings end without clear next steps or owners.

## What kinds of leaders benefit most?

In my experience, the best coaching candidates are high-potential, engaged and motivated to grow. Much of the impact of coaching happens *between* sessions, as the person reflects on their mindset and experiences and practices new behaviors.

Some high-potential leaders are incredibly smart and headstrong. Believe it or not, they're an excellent fit for coaching. Highly intelligent, self-sufficient people often don't respond to development where they're on the wrong side of the power dynamic, being told what to do and how to do it by a trainer, manager or mentor. Coaching gives them the space to examine the whys behind their thinking, question it and change it to achieve something *they* want.

Coaching is valuable at every level, from early-career professionals to the C-suite. My clients have included an account manager building confidence, a VP of Operations leading 300 people through 40% company growth, and a COO navigating the next right path in his career.

## Is it worth it?

Companies that invest in coaching report a median [return of **7x** their investment](https://coachingfederation.org/blog/coaching-statistics-the-roi-of-coaching-in-2024), according to the ICF Global Coaching Client Study, conducted by PricewaterhouseCoopers.

I've seen it firsthand. After coaching, one VP's CEO noticed they were coming across as clearer and more open. A senior director’s improved communication caught the C-suite’s attention and changed how leadership saw their impact. Those are the kinds of changes other people notice, and they're what move careers and companies forward.
